Staff Reporter MULTI-DRUG
treatment always produces better results in diabetic patients,
according to consultant endocrinologist at Hamad General Hospital Dr
Ibrahim al-Janahi. Dr al-Janahi said this while delivering a lecture
at a function of the Indian Medical Association (Qatar chapter) and
Indian Doctors Club recently. While elaborating on various
medications available for type-2 diabetes, Dr al-Janahi stressed upon
the usefulness of investigating glycosylated haemoglobin, in every
three months. He said such a step would help provide information on
the percentage of average blood sugar over the previous three months.
This, Dr al-Janahi said, would enable the physician to alter drug
regimes or identify drug defaulters. Dr al-Janahi said since the
installation of the insulin pump at Hamad Hospital, a large number of
patients have benefited from the pocket-sized electronic medical
device. The pump, when attached to the body surface of a diabetic
automatically delivers fixed doses of insulin to the patient over
regular intervals even while continuing to determine the blood sugar
levels periodically. While cautioning the people on the growing
incidence of diabetics, Dr al-Janahi said according to studies, in the
next 20 years at least 300mn people are expected to suffer from
diabetics and the majority of the new additions would be from the Asian
countries. Earlier, Dr K C Chacko, senior doctor at Hamad Hospital,
introduced the speaker. IMA president Dr Sameer Kalandhan welcomed the
gathering. Dr Joyal Jacob Mathew chaired the meeting while Dr Susan
George proposed the vote of thanks. Later, Indian Ambassador George Joseph presented a memento to Dr al-Janahi. Mepha Pharma sponsored the event. The next scientific session will be held on ‘metaolic syndrome’ on October 25 at Millennium Hotel. On November 2, IMA will hold a free medical camp for labourers, to be organised by the Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF). |
